Real time measurement in electrostatic oilers

As-it-happens flow measurement data saves time and cost of oil verification
Oil coating on sheet steel

Steel and Aluminum mills that do not use flow meters are at a huge disadvantage. Oil coverage verification on steel and aluminum coils is time intensive and does not deliver the process control that you require. Even with the most careful of procedures, measurement of the oiling process that is done off-line will be impacted by temperature, viscosity and pump slip.

The common technique of gathering samples and processing them in a lab to determine how much oil was deposited on the metal, involves many steps. Beginning with the cutting of precision sized pieces from an oiled roll, weighing the samples, washing off the oil and then weighing the metal again to determine a weight difference which is often in a fraction of a gram range is laborious, and painstaking. Small scales are used to provide fraction of a gram resolution, but to keep the sample weight within the range of the scale a small, precisely measured piece of metal must be procured for the testing. Those who have perfected the technique are to be applauded. Unfortunately, the oil delivery is not a fixed value and the oil weight you determine may be yesterday's news.

Delivery is affected by changes in temperature, changing the viscosity, altering back pressure on the pump; combined with wear this will change the internal leakage. Accurately measuring yesterday's delivery does not provide any real time information about flow changes. For the lab results to have value, you need an independent flow measurement to act as a comparison for the weight. Once the relationship has been established and the flow display calibrated, real time flow changes can be seen and controlled through closed loop control of the pump.

An oiler without a flow meter is like looking in the rear view mirror to drive your car. You need real time data, not historical results. Use a P213 Max meter to close the loop on your oiler pump. If you would like a quote for a similar project, please let us know.
